El Baile de Bomba- B omba Dance

La Bomba es un baile ancestral desde los tiempos de la esclavitud en PR. Surgio de los ingenios azucareros donde en los dias libres grupo de esclavos en las haciendas que les tocaba trabajar y vivir se reunian a manifestar su dolor, coraje y energia a traves de este baile de puro tambor y fuerza. Despues de la esclavitud un sector de la raza negra en Puerto Rico lo bailaba en sus barrios marginales de las costas. Hoy en dia gracias a familias precursoras de este genero musical es como todavia se preserva y ha resurgido entre muchos jovenes este baile. Familas predominantes en la bomba son los Cepeda, en Santurce y Carolina, Los Ayala en Loiza y ahora toda una generacion al rescate de la bomba como lo sonTata Cepeda , Nelly Lebron y Dufrase,y la gama de personas especialmente jovenes que han retomado este ritmo y lo han dado al mundo, Elia Cortes, Oxil y las Nandi, Marien Torres, los hermanos Emmanuelli, Marie Calabo, Norma Salazar , Irene Macklosky , Desde Cero, Nuno, Ivan,Pablo Rivera , Tico Fuentes, Otoki y Angel Luis Reyes y otros jovenes que han ido a investigar a las personas mayores que eran bailadores y tocadores de bomba de comienzos de siglo pasado, para devolver al pueblo y a la juventud este tesoro tan intenso de ritmos ancestrales llamado Bomba.


Bomba is an ancestral dance and rythm hat comes from the first settlemente of slaves working the sugar cane fields in Puerto Rico. After the slavery there were settlements of marginal communities along the shores where certain days were dedicated to dance Bomba creating like different groups of well known bomEba dancers or bailadores along the coasts of PR with different rythms and styles (CICA, LERO , Seis CORRIDO, CUEMBE, GRASIMA)pertaining to la bomba del sur, bomba de Loiza, bomba de Santurce. It is a beautiful intense dance and also a challenge between the dancer and one of the drummers called PRIMO who is the only one in charge to mark on the drum the movement of the dancer that he does not know what the dancer is going to do or how is going to move, but the drummer has to be precise in his drumming, he has to make the percusive sound on the drum at the same time that the dancer do the movement.


Hay lugares donde la bomba se manifiesta totalmente y eres libre de bailarla como la quieras bailar si no has tomado clases anteriormente. Un lugar frecuentado y atractivo es la Cooperativa de Pinones, COPI, todos los segundos y ultimos viernes de mes comenzando a las 8 pm. Pablo Rivera y Ariel, tambien se turnan un vente tu de buenisimos pleneros mientras descansan los tocadores de bomba. Los domingos a las 7pm en El Balcon del Zumbador en Pinones. Es exquisito ver desde ninos hasta adultos entraditos en anos y jovenes bailando y mostrando figuras en este exquisito baile. Rio Piedras no se queda atras, ciertos jueves en el bar cafe al aire libre EL BORICUA en el corazon de Rio Piedras a las 10pm hay bombazos con TAMBUYE.

There are certain places where you can appreciate a night of intense bomba drumming and dancidn. Such as : Copi, or Cooperativa Pinones, where is at the of Pinones coming from Isla Verde after the bridge at your left, and EL Balcon del Zumbador also on the main road of Pinones, Sundays at 7pm, and certain Thursdays at the Heart of Rio Piedras in EL BORICUA.
at 10pm. Bomba is also the drums, that nowadays Ivan is constructing them in the old ways. The dance is intense and has many styles and rythms depending on the origin of the place , the one of the South is very cadence and slow, the one of Santurce is stylish with figure, the one of Loiza is called El Seis Corrido, is very free and with a lot of hip movement, and sometimes can be dance barefooted. The only thing in common is that the dancer challenges the drummer by making dancing movements that the PRIMO the drum that follows the dancer. The drummer cannot do it before neither after the step of the dancer. Welcome to see them and participate in a bombazo on these places.
